In Jena, industry and science are breaking new ground in the area of environmental technologies. For example, futuristic sustainable energy storage systems are being researched in Germany's unique centre for energy and environmental chemistry (CEEC). The Green Photonics innovation cluster at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena focuses on the sustainable use of light. The subjects of electromobility, geothermal energy, the application of green technologies in the trades and approaches to increase energy efficiency in municipalities are also being promoted at the highest echelons in Jena.
