With a focus on optics and photonics as well as health and the life sciences, the approximately 4,500 scientists in Jena contribute to the further development of society and work on the solution of relevant issues of the future.
The city is home to the traditional Friedrich Schiller University and the practice-oriented Ernst Abbe University. Most of Jena's twelve research institutes are located at the Beutenberg. The "LIGHT LIFE LIBERTY" profile line of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the slogan "where life sciences meets physics" of the Beutenberg Campus sum up the focus on of interdisciplinary research in Jena.
In Jena, particular attention is paid to technology and research transfer. As an innovation driver and nucleus for start-ups, Jena supports the marketable development of research results and new technologies with a broad spectrum of consulting services.
